In Greek mythology, the Nereids were the 50 daughters of Nereus and Doris.  Associated with the Aegean these sea nymphs often accompanied Poseidon and helped sailors to servive fierce storms.  An oval basket supprted at each by two Nereids figures on a base moulded to represent waves, produced by Wedgwood in Queen's Ware.  Illustrated in the 1878 catalogue of Ornamental Shapes.
