In the late 1789 Josiah Wedgwood I, celebrated a monumental achievement - a reproduction in Jasper of the Portland or Barberini vase - a magnificent first century cameo glass artefact Purchased in 1783 by Sir William Hamiltom who soon realised he had overstretched his finances and was obliged to sell on this famous artefact to the Dowager Duchess of Portland, held in her own private musemum until her death.  Bought in 1786 by her son who immediately lent it to Wedgwood to copy.  It was only then that Wedgwood realised it was made of glass not stone.  Reproduced in classic black and white.
